At the launch event on Tuesday, September 30, Microsoft revealed the technical preview of the new operating system that, until that point, enthusiasts knew as Windows 9. Microsoft did not state an official reason for why they are jumping from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10, but announcers did allude to the idea that “10” sounds better than “9” with the following quote: "This product, when you see the product in your fullness I think you'll agree with us that it's a more appropriate name."

Why the change? It has been speculated that Microsoft wanted to avoid similarities to the Windows 95, Windows 98 because they feared people would be confused by the seemingly-backward jump to 9 (rather than a continuation of the Windows 7, Windows 8 series).

What are some of the biggest changes users can expect from Windows 10?

No more duality. Perhaps one of the biggest complaints regarding Windows 8 was the “duality” feature, which was intended to bridge the gap between mobile and PC use. Instead, a function meant to help users multitask more seamlessly made the PC/mobile transition more complicated – creating two separate sessions instead of one in two different views. Now, power users will even be able to easily create multiple desktops and move applications and programs between them as they choose.

Expanded Start menu. Microsoft listened to customers’ desperate cries for the return of the Start button. In fact, they went a step further and will combine the traditional menu with the sleek modern app style of Windows 7 and 8, and is fully customizable (including size).

Windowed apps. Multi-taskers rejoice: Windows 10 will feature modern apps that run in windowed mode and will be resizeable.

Microsoft gave an approximate release date for the new operating system of late 2015.
